Leader In Me/ 7 Habits
Thanks to our PTSA who continue to support our school through membership to the “Leader In Me” which includes a wealth of resources at each grade level for teaching Social Emotional Learning skills. During the month of September and continuing into October staff are teaching what it means to be “Proactive” and looking for students who are demonstrating it through their actions. Being Proactive, Habit 1 means to take responsibility for your choices and behaviors. This habit is the key to all of the other habits; that’s why it comes first. A way that individuals can describe this habit is, “I am in charge of my own life. I am responsible for whether I am happy or sad. I choose how I react to other people and different situations.” Our goal is teach students that before we decide what to do in a situation we need to understand that different choices or actions on our part yield different results or outcomes. Being “Proactive” means thinking about those outcomes before we act or decide what to do.  With your child, think of ways to Be Proactive and reinforce the idea of how different choices lead to different outcomes.

For example, choose something to represent the pause button for your family. It could be a body movement, such as signaling with a hand, jumping up and down, or waving an arm; an action, such as switching the lights on and off; a sound, such as ringing a bell, or mimicking an animal sound; or even a word. Each time this signal is given, everyone will know the pause button is being pushed. All activity and interaction, including conversation, arguing, debating, and so forth, should pause or stop. This signal serves as a reminder for all to stop, think, and consider alternative choices and possible outcomes. The ability to push the pause button gives family members the time and opportunity to work together in being proactive and creating strong family relationships!
