Dear Families,

On September 3, our superintendent, Dr. Alison Brynelson, shared the district’s initiative to prevent and respond to hate speech. Hate speech is any hurtful or discriminatory expression—spoken, written, or through actions—that target someone because of who they are or are perceived to be (such as race, religion, gender identity, disability, or ethnicity). It is not the same as a disagreement; hate speech is about causing harm.

At Mukilteo Elementary, our focus is ensuring every student feels safe and has a true sense of belonging. We support this through:
  • Teaching clear and consistent behavior expectations
  • Embedding social-emotional learning into daily instruction
  • Using restorative practices to repair and strengthen relationships
  • Fostering a positive, inclusive school culture
Across the district, teachers will also be guiding students to recognize different identities, reflect on how words and actions affect others, and practice how to stand up for peers or ask an adult for help. We want all students and families to know that hate speech will not be tolerated at Mukilteo Elementary—or anywhere in the Mukilteo School District.

If you would like to learn more, here is a resource that may be helpful: How to Talk to Your Children About Hate Speech.

Thank you for supporting our belief in the dignity, worth, and potential of every child. We are excited for the year ahead!

Picking Up Your Student Early?

If there is a change in your student’s dismissal plan, please notify the office before the end of the day, preferably by 1:00 p.m. The office can get very busy toward the end of the day, and locating students on short notice can take time.

Also, please note that we prefer not to call your child out of class before you arrive, so allowing a little extra time helps ensure everything runs smoothly. We want to make sure you get to your appointment on time!

Thank you for your understanding and support.

October Reading Challenge

To complete this reading challenge, choose four different books to read this month that match the categories listed. Be sure to write the name of the book you read in or next to the pumpkin where it fits. Turn it into Mrs. Morse or Mrs. Edwards when you're done for a chance to win a prize. Stop by the library to pick up a paper copy. Happy Reading!

Volunteer To Be an Art Docent

The ME PTSA oversees the Art Docent Program, which is run entirely by volunteers. Art Docents bring fine arts into the classroom approximately once a month. You do not need to be an artist or a teacher to volunteer.

Short lessons and fun projects introduce students to artists and works of art, contextual world history, and art movements through different artistic mediums, as acrylics, watercolors, chalk/oil pastels, and collage. They also teach art concepts as color theory, perspective, texture, shading, blending, and more.

Volunteer To Be a Nature Guide

ME PTSA's Nature Guides are volunteers who enable students to learn about nature in the ME Outdoor Classroom and Garden.

Volunteers partner with teachers to lead activities for students in our outdoor learning space. We have a pre-recorded orientation available for volunteers who are interested in becoming Nature Guides, as well as year-round activities for each grade.

Student lessons include taking time to practice gratitude and mindfulness in nature, which has been shown to improve academic and social emotional learning outcomes for students.

Food for Thought Donations

Food For Thought is a donation driven program, and has helped provide students in need with classroom snacks for the past 5 years! Snacking in a healthy way improves energy levels and mental clarity. Smart snacking can assist in maintaining your blood sugar levels throughout the day.

If you would like to help donate to the cause, please bring snacks to the front office any time. Thank you for supporting this program and ensuring our students in need have an available snack!
